Cogmanskloof Besproeiingskema

Sep 17, 2019Engineering

Most local residents of Ashton and Montagu are familiar with the term CBR water. However to fully appreciate the total extent of this amazing irrigation scheme one needs to read and see the pictures in the attached documents (English and Afrikaans) which highlight special people, their beliefs in the future and engineering principles which explain how life giving water is transported, stored and distributed to farming and municipal operations in the Ashton and Montagu areas.

Water, vital for life, was an elusive commodity for the farmers in the Ashton and Montagu districts in the Klein Karoo and in 1981 the Cogmanskloof Irrigation Board’s Water scheme was formed. The scheme currently (2019) supplies water to 147 customers including the local Langeberg Municipality.

After a few years, the system has proved itself as a reliable source of water for the area and started expanding, and after initially been known as ‘Black snake’, its name has now been changed to ‘Golden vein’.
